Stand Up Paddleboard Inland Open Water Leader Training
The SUP Inland Open Water Leader is open to anyone with experience of paddling in inland waters. The award will enable you to lead fun, safe and enjoyable trips for groups of paddleboarders, with a range of experience.
This run over two days, the training course will support the development of your personal skill level and leadership ability to lead a group of paddlers in moderate inland open waters. The training emphasises the application of a variety of techniques appropriate for exposed open water, requiring the paddler to perform appropriate and effective manoeuvres in real situations.
The training covers four key areas:
- Personal paddling skills
- Rescue skills
- Safety, leadership and group skills
- Theory
The British Canoeing Awarding Body SUP Inland Open Water Leader qualification is appropriate for leading others on journeys on inland open water. This includes large areas of open water that exceed the sheltered water definition, where the paddlers are no more than 500 metres offshore and in wind strengths that do not exceed Beaufort force 4. It also includes moving water environments up to, but not including, grade 2 rivers (not involving shooting of, or playing on weirs or running rapids).
Please note formal training is not mandatory, however if you chose to access the training you will have a great couple of days, develop your community of practice as well as make friends and paddle with likeminded paddlers.
