Open Canoe Paddler Group Events – How and Why We Run Them

Recently, a few questions have been raised about the events organised by WithDave and Don Paddler. We’d like to take a moment to clarify how these gatherings are run — not because we need to justify them, but because transparency matters to us and our volunteers. These events are entirely non-profit. Neither WithDave Ltd nor any individual involved makes money from organising or running them. WithDave Ltd provides insurance and applies our established safety framework to ensure every event is delivered professionally and responsibly. Our volunteers are BCAB qualified coaches and leaders who generously give their time for free. In return, we cover accommodation and the meals included as part of the event. Other expenses, including travel, are not paid. When an event is particularly well supported and we have the means, we have occasionally been able to offer a small contribution towards travel for those coming from far away — but this is never guaranteed. For our Yorkshire 26 pre-symposium event, we are bringing in a paid guest leader each day: expert coaches and leaders operating at the highest level of the sport. This is to ensure participants receive exceptional instruction and support. Participation in all events is completely optional. Likewise, the door is open for anyone who wishes to organise and run their own open, transparent, not-for-profit event for the group — and this Facebook community will happily support you in doing so. We’re proud of what these events bring to the community: shared learning, safe paddling, and a welcoming environment. Thank you to everyone who continues to support and appreciate the effort that goes into making them happen.
